NEW LOCATION: Akron Urban League Juneteenth Celebration with The City of Akron at John S. Knight This Wednesday June 19, 2024 1PM -7PM!

Join The Akron Urban League and The City of Akron on June 19, 2024 at the John S. Knight Center, for a vibrant celebration of Juneteenth, a pivotal moment in American history marking the end of slavery. This event is FREE to the public, offering a diverse range of activities designed to educate, inspire, and bring our community together. With programs scheduled from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and learn.

Event Schedule

1:00 pm – 1:30 pm: Opening Ceremony

Kick off the celebration with a powerful opening ceremony, setting the tone for a day of reflection, celebration, and community.

1:30 pm – 2:15 pm: Crowning Glory – History of Head Wrapping & Tutorial (Held in the Firestone Room)

Explore the rich history and cultural significance of head wrapping. This engaging tutorial will guide you through traditional techniques and styles. You must Register Here to participate.

2:30 PM:  Contemporary Jazz by Hosea’s State of Mind (Live in the Rotunda)

Join us as the “Hooks Boys” – Hosea and Reggie return to their hometown with their full band to perform two sets of unforgettable music! 

2:30 pm – 3:15 pm: Crowning Glory – History of Head Wrapping & Tutorial (Held in the Firestone Room)

A second session for those who missed the first or want to deepen their understanding and skills in head wrapping. You must Register Here

2:15 pm – 3:00 pm: Unleashing the Brilliance Within: Supporting Our Children’s Success – Parent Workshop (Held in the Goodrich Room)

Parents and guardians, come learn strategies to nurture and support your children’s academic and personal growth. You must Register Here

3:15 pm – 4:00 pm: Mindful Care: Supporting the Mental Wellness of Our Elders – Caregiver Workshop (Held in the Goodrich Room)

Caregivers, this workshop is dedicated to helping you understand and support the mental health needs of our elders. You must Register Here to participate.

4:15 pm – 5:00 pm: Paint & Celebrate (Held in the Omnova Room)

Join a fun and creative painting session to celebrate Juneteenth. All materials will be provided.

4:30 PM:  Old School Funk by Hosea’s State of Mind (Live in the Rotunda)

5:15 pm – 6:00 pm: Paint & Celebrate (Held in the Omnova Room)

A second painting session for those who couldn’t attend the earlier one. Unleash your creativity and celebrate together. You must Register Here to participate.

6:00 pm – 7:00 pm: Greek Showcase (Held in the Rotunda)

Conclude the day with a dynamic Greek showcase, featuring performances that highlight the cultural heritage and contributions of Greek-letter organizations.
